Mauricio Pochettino makes Christian Eriksen transfer statement ahead of Arsenal clash

Mauricio Pochettino will breathe a huge sigh of relief if Christian Eriksen ’s suitors haven’t made their move by this evening.

Because it will mean there’s no time left for the Dane to get his dream switch to one of Europe’s top clubs before the transfer window closes on the continent on Monday.

Speaking yesterday, Pochettino said: “The good thing is that if tomorrow nothing happens, it’s because it’s not going to happen on Monday.

“On Sunday, it’s the game [against Arsenal ], and after there’s no real time to do something. Tomorrow we are going to know if Christian is going to be with us or not. That’s the most important thing.”

Eriksen’s future has been a hot topic of conversation this summer

Eriksen told Spurs at the end of last season that he wanted a new challenge if the right opportunity came along.

And he’d set his heart on joining Barcelona , Real Madrid or Juventus , while Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid have both been linked with a move for him.

But the situation is complicated by the fact the 27-year-old has just one year left on his contract at Tottenham and, while he fancied moving on this summer, those clubs know they can get him for free in a year’s time.

If no one comes in for Eriksen today then Pochettino must decide whether or not to start him in the north London derby tomorrow.

Questions over Pochettino’s situation have also been asked in the past few days

Eriksen has started just one of Tottenham’s three games this season, against Manchester City , and the team clearly missed him prior to his arrivals against Aston Villa and Newcastle .

After starting him on the bench in the victory over Villa, Pochettino insisted it was because the player underwent abdominal surgery after the Champions League final in June.

And asked if he’d be in the starting line-up tomorrow, the Spurs boss added: “He’s working hard and that’s my judgement, with my staff. You need to be right and people need to trust us.

“If we make the decision that he’s going to play it’s because we believe he can perform in the way that we expect or we need him to perform. You cannot be 100 per cent right in your judgement. If some people have more information to make that decision, it’s us.

“People will say, ‘Why are you playing Christian?’ The team-mates can say, ‘Why are you playing Christian if the rumour is he’s going to leave? Gaffer, why am I not playing when Christian wants to leave, is looking to go away?’

“In this situation, there are plenty of things that happen inside that I cannot translate to you and you to our fans. The only way of working hard and being all together is trusting in us, in our decision, in our judgement, because it is so difficult.

“The first person interested in winning on Sunday or last Sunday is the manager, because I need to put my face in front of you and explain why.

“Every single decision is always in doubt. ‘Why not play Dele Alli ?’ ‘What is his injury?’ ‘Instead of playing one he is playing another’. The most important thing is to trust in our judgement. We are not always right, we make a lot of mistakes. We are humble enough to recognise our mistakes.”
