Mauricio Pochettino has ‘significant support’ from Manchester United squad to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

A significant portion of the Manchester United dressing room is in favour of Mauricio Pochettino being appointed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s replacement.

The Norwegian is under increasing pressure at Old Trafford following Wednesday’s humiliating 2-1 defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir in Turkey.

It was United’s form in the Champions League that was keeping the water from the door for Solskjaer but the Red Devils’ place in the last-16 is under threat, while they sit just four points above the relegation zone in 15th place in the Premier League.

Pochettino has been out of work since leaving Tottenham last November but the Argentine’s appearance on Monday Night Football last week did not go unnoticed by United, who are aware that the former Espanyol boss is now ready to return to club management.

United face Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday and a defeat could leave the club just one point above the bottom three heading into a two-week international break.

The club are aware that they risk losing out on Pochettino if they continue to overlook the Argentine and the Daily Mail claim there’s ‘significant’ support within the United dressing room for the former Tottenham boss.

While the squad do not necessarily want Solskjaer to be sacked, Pochettino would be the overwhelming favoured choice to take over should the Norwegian depart.

However, United cannot afford to overlook Pochettino for much longer as it’s claimed the Argentine has held talks with a ‘high-level’ club in recent weeks and he’s likely to accept the next significant offer if the Red Devils fail to make their move.

Solskjaer retains the support of the board for now but there are increasing concerns over the club’s results in recent weeks and in particular the manner of the losses.

United were slated for their defending in Istanbul, while the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham in September was the club’s joint-worst in Premier League history.

While the defending has improved in recent matches, the attacking has suffered as Solskjaer has selected two defensive midfielders to protect the back four after the harrowing loss to Spurs.

Pochettino was considered by United in 2016 as a replacement for Louis van Gaal but the club opted for Jose Mourinho. The Argentine was then the club’s first choice to replace the Portuguese in 2018 but United felt compelled to hire Solskjaer after the transformative effect he had on the club during interim charge.
