Maureen Lipman: Coronation Street star talks 'checking on' Diana Rigg in candid moment

Maureen Lipman revealed she had a “real soft spot” for Avengers star Diana Rigg just weeks after her death earlier this month. The Coronation Street star appeared as the James Bond actress’ understudy during a theatre performance in her earlier years.

The 74-year-old, who is no stranger to the stage, opened up about the actress who she admittedly has “strong memories” of.

It comes after Diana died from cancer aged 82 following a short battle with cancer.

Maureen revealed she worked alongside the Avengers and Game of Thrones star in the theatre when the Corrie star was aged 25.

“I had a very soft spot for Diana Rigg,” the actress explained. “I was her understudy for almost a year at the National Theatre at the Old Vic.”

The Weatherfield actress finished: “I couldn’t wait to get on [the stage]. You never have that again.”

Meanwhile, Maureen is starring in a new digital revival of Martin Sherman’s Olivier-nominated play, Rose, streaming this month which has since been extended.

The actress portrays a Jewish woman named Rose who traces her story from the devastation of Nazi-ruled Europe to conquering the American dream.

The thought-provoking production was filmed on stage to an empty auditorium at the Hope Mill Theatre.
