‘She still has baby brain!’ Matty J defends fiancée Laura Byrne after fans questioned her for taking their newborn daughter into a smoking area at Bondi Icebergs

Laura Byrne sent fans into a frenzy on Wednesday, after posting a photo of herself with Matty ‘J’ Johnson and their newborn baby in the smoking area of Sydney’s Bondi Icebergs.

And since receiving the online backlash for the photo, Matty jumped to her defense on Saturday during his Nova 96.9 Matt, Sarah & Matty J Show.

‘In Laura’s defence, she still has a bit of baby brain. She posted it and I said ”hey babe, that photo you posted there’s a smoking sign in the background”’, Matty explained to his co-hosts Matt De Groot and Sarah McGilvray.

He later revealed that the 33-year-old new mother actually thought the photo was ‘a no-smoking sign’.

‘There were a few unhappy people who commented on it saying, ”You shouldn’t be holding your baby on the balcony with a smoking sign right there,”’ he said.

‘There was only one guy smoking right at the end, so it’s not like we were hanging out (with the smoker). The good thing was Laura wasn’t too bothered.’

Not wanting to make a big fuss: 'She didn't want to make it bigger than it needed to be by removing it, she let her followers come to her defence,' Matty said

It comes after Laura took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a photo, enjoying what appeared to have been their first family outing.

The Bachelor stars were having lunch at Bondi Icebergs, when the new family decided to step out onto the balcony for a quick photo in front of the scenic backdrop.

But many of her followers couldn’t look past the ‘SMOKING AREA’ sign nailed to the wall behind the trio.

‘I hope no one was smoking while you had your baby out there… cute photo,’ commented one person.

The doting new mum replied, saying she hadn’t even noticed the sign behind them.

‘Everyone in front of us were dining. I didn’t even realise that behind us was the smoking area. Looks like just the one guy, we good,’ she commented.

Another follower wrote: ‘I love how you’re standing in the smoking area. Gorgeous lil fam (sic).’

Clearly getting fed up, Laura said she was being attacked by the ‘mummy mafia’.

‘Ahhhh s***, I didn’t even notice. We just went onto the balcony for a photo… Cue the mummy mafia!!!’ she responded.

Many of her followers were quick to jump to her defence, claiming people were overreacting.

‘I hope that balcony is supported properly. I hope your [sic] resting when baby rests. I hope you weren’t in the smoking area. I hope that blanket was warm enough and the correct tog… Seeeeerrrriously,’ wrote one person.

‘What I really hope is you enjoyed your lunch and this photo is gorgeous. The end.’

Added another: ‘Always going to be one person that comments on the “why are you taking the baby out near people smoking”. God forbid you walk past someone smoking. Enjoy the fresh air and time out of being in the house.’

Others poked fun at the whole situation.

‘Everyone was smoking. Even Marlie had one,’ wrote one person.

Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Laura for comment.

'Still letting the last 24hrs sink in... they’ve been the most rewarding, loving and emotional I’ve ever experienced,' Matty wrote on Instagram, just a day after Marlie-Mae's birth
