Matthijs de Ligt transfer: Man Utd face fresh competition in race for Ajax star

Manchester United face competition from Paris Saint-Germain in the race to sign Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt, according to reports in Holland.

De Ligt is certain to leave Champions League semi-finalists Ajax this summer after a stunning season.

The 19-year-old defender is set to depart the Amsterdam outfit after leading them to the Dutch league and cup double, but his future is still to be decided.

Barcelona had been leading the race but, with finances tight at Camp Nou, aren’t willing to do a deal on the terms of the centre-back’s agent, Mino Raiola.

Now United are looking to snap up the Dutch international, moving in when Barcelona refused to pay Raiola £12million to broker the move.

However it isn’t a foregone conclusion that he will arrive at Old Trafford, with PSG reportedly showing interest too.

According to De Telegraaf , PSG are willing to reach Ajax’s £75m valuation and are also happy to pay the commission demanded by Raiola.

De Ligt has previously claimed he will only move to a side in the Champions League, but when asked about a possible switch to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, he remained coy.

“I have read the reports about Manchester United ,” De Ligt told FOX Sports.

“I have seen the salary I would get, too. Would you take it? People should take these reports with a grain of salt. The stories are funny though.

“Everyone has been talking about my future for a year now. One day I will go there, and the next day I will go somewhere else.

“I have made quite a tour through Europe haven’t I? My focus is on the Nations League and after that I will see what will happen.”
