Matt Lucas has revealed he has helped raise £500,000 for charity to help feed those on the NHS front line fighting coronavirus- thanks in part to his Baked Potato Song.

The star is releasing a single of the jokey song that went viral on Twitter after he posted it to his followers.

A callback to his early 90s panel show Shooting Stars, the words were adapted to remind people to social distance and wash their hands in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking on Steph McGovern’s The Steph Show, he revealed that over the weekend alone, he has raised a staggering amount of money for Feed NHS – a new charity he’s launched alongside Damien Lewis and Helen McCrory

‘We’ve raised over half a million pounds on there since Friday, thanks to the generosity of people,’ he said. ‘It’s been amazing with the song. People have been recording their own versions and putting that up on Twitter.’

‘It’s been a bugger of an ear worm, and I apologise for that,’ he laughed.

To top it off, the single hasn’t even been released yet – with money being raised simply by awareness from the song via a JustGiving page set up through restaurant Leon.

‘The proceeds will go to Feed NHS, and all of the money in Feed NHS, will be distributed nationally to local NHS trusts to deliver good, high quality hot food to their workers,’ he said.

While on the show, Matt also spoke about his upcoming first stint as the new host of the Bake Off, admitting that they were supposed to start filming in three weeks, until coronavirus postponed it.

‘I’m so excited- I mean, free cake – there’s no way i’m going to say no to that!,’ he laughed.

‘We were supposed to start filming in about three weeks time, but obviously we’re just following the government guidelines and whenever they say it’s safe to make it, we’ll make it.’

‘But at the moment, like most other people, we’re sort of on hold,’ he added.

The Steph Show airs weekdays from 12pm on Channel 4.
