Matrix 4 release date, cast, trailer, plot: All we know about Keanu Reeves sequel

The Matrix, the 1999 hit starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, has become a seminal scientist-fi action film. And now it seems is the time for a reboot, with some of the key stars reprising their roles. Here is what Express.co.uk knows so far about The Matrix 4.

Who stars in The Matrix 4?

So far, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return for the fourth film – it has been confirmed Keanu will reprise his role as Neo.

Co-creator Lana Wachowski is reported to write, direct and produce the new film.

Lilly Wachowski, who co-created the franchise with her sibling, gave her blessing to the project earlier this year, so her involvement is unlikely.

It is also unclear at this point whether Laurence Fishburne, whose character Morpheus was one of the only survivors to see the new Zion in The Matrix Revolutions, will reprise his role.

Similarly, Carrie-Anne Moss’s character has also cast some confusion among fans as her character, Trinity, died along with Neo in the third of The Matrix franchise, so there could be a new version of Trinity set for The Matrix 4.

However, Lana referenced having “these characters back in my life” in an interview, meaning we could see Trinity return as before.

What is The Matrix 4 about?

At the moment, there is no confirmation of what the film could be about, as it is still in very early development.

Asked about the new film, Lana said: “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.

“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

So fans will just have to wait and see what the story is about.

When is The Matrix 4 out in cinemas?

There is no release date as the film is very much in development.

But sources suggested the film is set to begin production at the beginning of 2020, so there could be a little time to wait before it is seen in cinemas.

What is The Matrix franchise?

The Matrix, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is a sci-fi action film about a hacker, Neo.

The film sees Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, discovers his true identity as a saviour to people living in a simulated reality, The Matrix.

He joins Morpheus and Trinity to hack into The Matrix to save the world after a war between humans and machines – but there are adversaries in the real world and The Matrix trying to stop them.

The Matrix has been rereleased in some cinemas to mark its 20th anniversary, which may be the best way to get back into the franchise ahead of the new film.
