George Calombaris raised eyebrows on Monday when he wore dark sunglasses during an interview on The Project. 

And the 40-year-old MasterChef star has now explained why he had to protect his eyes under the bright studio lights.

He told told Nova FM’s Fitzy & Wippa that it certainly wasn’t a stylistic decision and reality was, in fact, far from glamorous.

‘Honestly, I’ve gone under two eye operations,’ George said.

‘A month ago… I love squash and I thought, “Saturday morning, I’ll play one of my head chefs”. I didn’t finish until late the night before, I went in a little tired, a little bit underdone and the ball smacked me right in the eye!

‘Bright lights absolutely punish me at the moment, just while this eye is healing. So those of you thinking that I had a big night… I wish!’

George then poked fun at himself and fellow judges Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston, who were also wearing spectacles during the interview. 

‘The three of us looked like nightclub owners, we’re getting ready for MasterChef: Mykonos!’ he said.

George shared a photo of himself as he prepared to go under at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. An arrow was drawn on his forehead pointing down at his right eye.

‘To make sure we operate on the correct eye,’ he wrote in the caption. 

George added that he had learned ‘huge lesson’ about wearing protective glasses when playing squash following the injury.
