A London Eurovision party for this year’s contest has been cancelled as the coronavirus outbreak continues.

In line with the latest advice issued by Prime Minister Boris Johnson advising against mass gatherings, London Eurovision made the announcement on social media that the party won’t be taking place.

On Instagram they said: ‘Further to the UK Government announcement this afternoon it is with a heavy heart that we announce the inevitable postponement of the London Eurovision Party 2020.’

The bash, due to take place on 29 March, is one of the biggest events on the calendar for Eurovision fans in the UK. Tickets went on sale on Sunday and were sold out.

Artists confirmed for the party included this year’s UK act James Newman, 2019 UK entry Michael Rice and 2018 UK entry SuRie.

Artists from Norway, France, Bulgaria and Australia were also on the bill.

No official word has been given on whether the contest in Rotterdam will still take place, but organisers are said to be looking at ‘various possible scenarios’ if the virus continues to spread.

A representative for the European Broadcasting Union said: ‘The EBU is, of course, closely monitoring the situation concerning the spread of coronavirus and taking all necessary health and safety precautions in line with WHO and national authority guidelines.

‘We will continue to follow developments across Europe; and are looking at various possible scenarios together with the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 host broadcasters NPO, NOS and AVROTROS.’

It has apparently been suggested that acts might have to perform in their own countries via video link.

The number of coronavirus deaths in the UK has jumped to 55 after 20 people died in just 24 hours.
