Behind closed doors – except for everything that leaked

New footage for Marvel’s Avengers will be released next month as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 gets three free new characters.

If you’re any kind of nerd you’ll known it’s the the San Diego Comic-Con at the moment, a sort of more general geek version of E3.

Video games don’t tend to be involved that much, unless you’re directly related to a movie or comic book – but, thankfully, that does include a number of Marvel games at the moment.

The Marvel Games panel covered three main games, starting with today’s release of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 which reveal Loki as a new playable character and promised Colossus and Cyclops as free extras on 30 August.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 gets its first free DLC

It was already known that the game would be getting paid-for DLC but not free characters as well. The first DLC pack will be themed around Marvel Knights and includes Blade, The Punisher, Morbius, and Moon Knight.

Also showcased was Iron Man VR, which hasn’t been mentioned since a brief annoucement teaser in March. There’s a new trailer below and apparently the game is playable on the show floor, but there’s still no release date.

The biggest news of the panel revolved around Marvel’s Avengers from Square Enix, which got a new gameplay demo that only people at the panel got to see – although it’ll be released next month to the general public.

Marvel’s Avengers had a not entirely convincing unveil at E3, although the behind the scenes footage we saw at the time – which also hasn’t been released publicly – was more impressive.

Apparently the new Comic-Con footage showed the superhero origins of Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, but unfortunately that’s about the only thing we don’t have leaked images of.

The confirmed list of playable characters is still only Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow but characters that have been shown in the game, or hinted at by the developer, now include Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel.

Square Enix also showed off a number of alternative costumes – the cosmetic extras that will drive the game’s microtransactions – and they include both classic outfits from the comics and ones made up by developer Crystal Dynamics.

And here’s the first paid-for DLC for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3

Those shown at the panel include Iron Man’s Original Sin armour, Hulk’s Joe Fixit suit, and Captain America’s old school scale armour.

Some costumes are bound to end up as PlayStation exclusives, as Square Enix already announced a partnership deal with Sony, but at the moment the only confirmed result of that team-up is that the PlayStation 4 will get early access to the beta.

And finally, it was revealed that there’ll be a statue of Captain America for the collector’s edition. Which we’re sure is not going to be cheap.

Marvel’s Avengers is due to release on 15 May next year, so this will  be its one and only San Diego Comic-Con before release. Which also means there should be much more news coming over the next few months.
