Married At First Sight star Michael Goonan admitted on Thursday that he went on the show for fame.

The 28-year-old company director appeared on KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O and said he ‘put the clown suit on for Australia.’

But despite him making the bold statement, Michael wasn’t aware that ‘wife’ Stacey Hampton was listening in the studio, with the 26-year-old later saying through tears that he ‘made a mockery of her.’

When asked about his antics on the show and the cheating scandal with Hayley Vernon, Michael told the hosts that it’s ‘a TV show.’

‘It’s a TV show guys. Like yeah, live and learn. We did fall in love and it was a great journey but at the end of the day it’s a TV show,’ Michael said.

‘It’s for three months. I put the clown suit on for Australia. I dressed up and I juggled, do you know what I mean?’

Host Kyle Sandilands cut in and told Michael that the show ‘isn’t Home and Away.’

‘This isn’t acting. Isn’t it supposed to be people that struggle to find love decide to go into an experiment where… you let experts pick for you so you find true love?’ Kyle said.

‘One hundred per cent and you go through the journey of true love and not everything’s perfect, I’m sure you can appreciate that Kyle,’ Michael replied.

He added that he wanted MAFS to be ‘entertaining.’

‘I’m saying like at the end of the day, you’re in there for Australia and they’re going to make it an entertaining show,’ Michael said.

‘They’re going to expose the cracks of everything that you’ve gone through. And it’s going to be amplified, it’s going to be blown up and it’s going to be watched because at the end of the day that’s what’s entertaining to watch.’

Michael and Hayley Vernon were finally exposed at Wednesday night’s dinner party.

The pair had hooked up in Vanessa Romito and Chris Nicholls’ apartment after a boozy night out in Sydney while Stacey was in Adelaide with her children.

Before the dinner party, a remorseful Hayley had tried to clear the air with Stacey.

‘I hooked up with Michael. I kissed him,’ she said. ‘We were having a couple of drinks, one thing led to another. Michael was quite flirtatious. And yeah, that’s just it. We kissed.

‘It’s a pretty terrible thing to happen, for you. I don’t want to say that we were drunk and it just got out of control and we just hooked up… [but] that’s what happened and it just sounds so pathetic.’

During Wednesday night’s dinner party, Michael refused to be held accountable for what happened because he was ‘too drunk to remember’.

He acknowledged that he was acting ‘stupid’ and flirting with Hayley, but insisted he had no recollection of kissing her.

Hayley, who prides herself on being honest regardless of the consequences, told the group they had in fact kissed.

Meanwhile, Stacey took her husband’s side in the scandal and accused Hayley of ‘taking advantage’ of Michael while he was drunk.

Married At First Sight continues Sunday at 7pm on Channel Nine
