Mario Falcone has credited his sister Giovanna Fletcher for saving his life during his battle with depression after attempting to take his own life.

The former Towie star, 33, revealed that the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! winner encouraged him to speak about his feelings when he felt his lowest nine years ago.

Speaking to Hello! Magazine, the reality star said: ‘Giovanna was amazing. The “Mama Gi” we saw on TV… she has always been that. She is super organised in a crisis and just knew what to do and got me to counselling.

‘As a man, you have your guard up, and I felt I had to put on this kind of bravado, but she told me “you need to open up”. That saved my life without a doubt.’

Now an ambassador for Papyrus, a national charity dedicated to preventing young suicide, Mario has said he was ‘shocked’ to discover how primary age children suffer from mental health issues and suicidal thoughts.

Speaking of his two-year-old son Parker, who he shares with his fiancée Becky Miesner, Mario said he wanted him to communicate his feelings effectively.

‘You teach your children how to walk, how to talk. I think you have to teach them how to open up, so it becomes second nature.’

Mario also told the publication that he ‘feels lucky’ to have transitioned to where he is in life right now and is currently hoping his June wedding to Becky will go ahead in Italy.

The couple were left devastated after they were forced to cancel their destination wedding at the start of the pandemic last year.

Becky said on Instagram at the time: ‘Thursday 28th May 2020 was going to be our wedding day in Italy but we have decided to cancel due to the current situation, heartbroken.’

Mario, who is best known for his time on Towie and his appearance on Celebrity Big Brother in 2013, was previously engaged to ex Lucy Mecklenburgh.

Mario’s full interview is in the latest issue of Hello!, out now.
