Margaret Qualley says environmental activism made her ‘not popular’ in school

Margaret Qualley has revealed she was “not popular” at school because of her commitment to environmental issues.

The Emmy-nominated star of Fosse/Verdon and Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood told Hunger Magazine she used to put up posters of cows being led to slaughter and go through rubbish bins at school as she wanted to curb her impact on the environment.

Speaking to Hunger, the magazine edited by British photographer Rankin, the 25-year-old said: “I was not a popular kid. I used to put up signs of cows being slaughtered in my North Carolina high school and I would rummage through the trash in the cafeteria to separate recycling.

“I’m definitely [climate] conscious and it’s definitely something I think about. There are a lot of ways I could improve my lifestyle to accommodate my carbon footprint.”

The actor, who is the daughter of Four Weddings and a Funeral star Andie MacDowell, said she was proud to be part of a generation that took care of the planet, while admitting she found it “frustrating” when people don’t make an effort.

“The younger generation is where the real change is coming from,” she said. “Because they are the ones who are having to deal with the impact, so it’s frustrating when people whose lives are barely affected by it are so dismissive of these problems.

“God, wouldn’t it be great if we had a Bernie Sanders [in the White House] to educate us on all this, or an [Alexandria] Ocasio-Cortez or an [Elizabeth] Warren?”
