Marcus Rashford wants to stay at Man Utd but wage structure issue is key – Bryan Robson

That is according to club legend Bryan Robson, who skippered United to two Premier League titles.

Rashford’s contract expires next June and Old Trafford white-collars as keen to pin down the academy graduate on a new long-term deal.

It has been suggested United may need to pay the England international north of £300,000 a week to retain his services,

Rashford, 21, currently takes home a reported £45,000 a week which is ten times smaller than Alexis Sanchez’s wage.

It has led Rashford to stall over improved overtures, and Robson, who played is a global ambassador for United, believes the club have shot themselves in the foot.

“Everybody knows the salary scales that the top players are now demanding,” he told The Sun.

“And, in a sense, United have created their own problem in terms of the kind of money they now pay.

“They have tried to do their best by the players and make the club as attractive as possible to prospective new signings.

“You have to applaud the ambition but it means that top players – and that is what Rashford is – will look to earn as much as they can as part of the structure.”

Robson used to sort contracts for younger players such as Gary Neville in his playing days and understands Rashford’s position.

“At the end of the day the kid has to be looked after,” he admitted.

“And at the same time they can’t be seen to be taking the chance of losing him – not that I believe that he would really want to go.

“They have to get the deal done to keep him – just as long as it’s not stupid money.”

Fellow club ambassador Andrew Cole spoke out about local boy Rashford’s future in April.

“He is telling everyone he wants to stay,” the former striker told Sky Sports.

“Not just for the short term but for the long haul. He is going to be one of the big players in the club’s future.”
