Marcus Rashford contract: Man Utd forward signs new four-year deal worth £250,000 per week

England striker Marcus Rashford has signed a new contract with Manchester United on a reported £250,000-a-week plus bonuses, making him the highest-paid English player in the Premier League.

The deal, which runs until 2023 along with the option for an additional fifth year, makes Rashford the third-highest paid player at Old Trafford behind Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, but sees him become the current top-earner in Gareth Southgate’s squad. Only Wayne Rooney, who has retired from international football and plays in MLS for DC United, earns more as an Englishman.

Rashford has been locked in talks with the club over a new contract after he caught the eye of Barcelona and Juventus, with United moving swiftly to tie down his long-term future.

But having joined the academy in 2005 at the age of seven, Rashford admitted he only saw himself staying at United.

“Manchester United has been everything in my life since I arrived here at the age of seven,” he said. “This club has shaped me, both as a player and as a person, so it is such a privilege every time I get the opportunity to wear the shirt.

“I want to thank Ole and his staff for everything they have done for me; they are the perfect group of coaches to learn from as I continue my development and look to push on to the next level.

“I will be giving everything I have to help get this club back to where it belongs and deliver the success that our fans deserve.”

The news is the third big announcement out of Old Trafford this summer following the arrivals of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and means that United do not need to worry about losing the 21-year-old for the foreseeable future.

But it does make Rashford one of the richest players in the league just three years on from his professional debut, with the add-ons in his contract taking his potential weekly earnings to £300,000.

Yet United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attempted to justify the contract by praising Rashford as a gift of his generation, and believes that his early experience of playing for United after being trusted by Louis van Gaal in February 2016 to make his debut guarantees him a “fantastic future.

“Marcus is one of the most talented English players of his generation. He is an outstanding player; blessed with natural pace and energy,” Solskjaer said.

“Marcus is a shining example of the talent that our Academy produces and his upbringing means that he truly understands what it means to play for Manchester United.

“Despite being only 21 years old, Marcus already has great experience. He has a fantastic future ahead of him with the club and I am delighted that he has signed a new contract.”
