Manuel Pellegrini accuses West Ham players of lacking fight after dismal Everton defeat

Manuel Pellegrini let rip at his West Ham players after watching them fall to a 2-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

The Hammers boss accused his players of lacking fight and stated that the dismal display was their worst of the year.

Kurt Zouma and Bernard scored first half goals for the Toffees and had it not been for Lukasz Fabianski, the home side would have been three or four down by half-time.

At the other end, an attack led by Marko Arnautovic was ineffective and forced England keeper Jordan Pickford into a single save across the entire 90 minutes.

Not a happy man

“The complete game we played very badly,” said Pellegrini after the game. “We didn’t create chances in Everton’s box and conceded two goals.

“It was one of those bad days.

“It wasn’t only the worst home performance but the worst performance of the year.

“You can lose, but not like that – without fighting.”

Pellegrini was furious on the touchline for much of the game

Pellegrini spent much of the game with a scowl on his face as his side were given the run around by Marco Silva’s men.

Time and time again the Merseysiders’ found gaping holes in the Hammers defence and midfield, with club captain Mark Noble absent.

The hosts were booed off at half-time and boos again rang around the stadium just after the hour mark when Arnautovic – who scored twice for Austria in midweek – was substituted.

Arnautovic threw a water bottle in disgust as he slumped on the bench, and Pellegrini said that the boos that rung around weren’t just for the club’s highest-paid player.

There goes the water bottle

He added: “The fans’ boos were because they weren’t happy with the team.

“We cannot blame that performance on one player, Marko was not guilty on why we lost this game.”

Everton’s win ensured they climbed above both Watford and West Ham in the Premier League table, and now sit just one point behind seventh-place Wolves in the battle to be ‘best of the rest’.

Kurt Zouma celebrates the opening goal

Marco Silva said: “I’m very satisfied and produce of what we did here. We are working to achieve this type of performance more consistently.

“I’m really happy with what we did, from the first minute we were the best team on the itch.

“We had quality, created problems and knew before the match where we could punish them.

“It could have been three four or I’ve at half tie because we had he chances.”
