He noticed the wound was getting darker and said the pain was getting increasingly worse.

Doctors at the University of Arizona College in Phoenix, US, noted that there was 3cm of black tissue on the end of his member.

It had become necrotic and the skin was starting to rot, according to the case published in the Visual Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Bit on the tip

The case report doesn’t explain exactly how the injury happened, but it does state that the patient’s “significant other accidentally bit him on the tip of the penis during sexual intercourse.”

He was given antibiotics in hospital, and lucky to avoid the need for surgery.

Patients who are bitten on the penis often do not seek immediate medical care, and the disease process often progresses

Dr Marc Zosky

Dr Marc Zosky, author of the report, said: “As in this case, patients who are bitten on the penis often do not seek immediate medical care, and the disease process often progresses.

“Progression to skin ulceration and infection is common and requires careful wound care and antibiotic therapy.

“In rare cases, bites can lead to life-threatening infections such as Fournier’s gangrene that require emergent surgical treatment.”

Lucky escape

Fortunately, this guy appeared to have a lucky escape.

Previously, we reported on a 65-year-old who was left horrified when part of his penis fell off after a complication during surgery caused it to rot away.

Two weeks earlier, the man had an operation to remove his thyroid – a gland in the throat – after doctors had discovered a cancerous tumour.

While he was unconscious on the operating table doctors inserted a catheter so he could pee, but during several attempts to insert the tube they damaged the man’s urethra.

The trauma triggered a condition called Fournier’s gangrene – a “flesh-eating bug” of the genitals – and his manhood started to rot.

Doctors at  King George’s Medical University Hospital in India cut away the rotting flesh, dressed the wound and the patient was sent home.

But the gangrene began to spread again and two weeks later part of the shaft of his penis “autoamputated” – or fell off on its own.

In a more recent case, we told how a bloke’s penis started to rot when he injected Vaseline in it to try and make it bigger.
