Manchester United's Paul Pogba stance after Frenchman's public exit declaration

Manchester United will take a tough line with Paul Pogba after he went public in his attempt to force his way out of Old Trafford.

Pogba has rocked United by declaring he wants to leave the club for a second time because he “wants a new challenge”.

United are not simply prepared to wave goodbye to their star midfielder, who cost a then-world record £89million in 2016, and are determined to resist letting him go.

Real Madrid and Pogba’s former club Juventus want him and United are adamant they will only reluctantly consider selling him for £150million.

This could put him beyond the reach of both Real and Juve and the Spanish giants have just paid £88million for Eden Hazard in a deal, which could ultimately be worth close to £150million.

United know this and their hardline stance is a message to Pogba that the French World Cup winner cannot dictate terms to them.

The two sides are on collision course and Pogba believes he can pressure United into selling him.

He used a promotional tour of Japan to go public with his desire to leave and turn up the heat on United.

His controversial agent Mino Raiola has also won his appeal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport against his worldwide ban and is free to negotiate his departure.

Pogba, 26, enjoyed his best campaign for United last season, scoring 16 goals and creating 10 assists, and he wants to cash in on a big-money move away.

He returned to Old Trafford to win Premier Leagues and Champions Leagues and wants out because United are nowhere near lifting either.

Woodward won’t be selling cheap

“For me, I have been for three years in Manchester and have been doing great – some good moments and some bad moments, like everybody, like everywhere else,” he said.

“After this season and everything that happened this season, with my season being my best season as well… I think for me it could be a good time to have a new challenge somewhere else.

“I am thinking of this: to have a new challenge somewhere else.”

Pogba’s move has given boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a real headache and the Norwegian only wants players fully committed to United as he embarks on his major rebuilding job.

United’s fans will want rid of Pogba and they have long been unhappy with him, feeling he has done little during his three years back at the club to justify his huge fee and wages.

United have begun planning for life without Pogba and have identified Monaco’s Youri Tielemans, who impressed on loan at Leicester during the second half of last season, and Tottenham ’s Christian Eriksen as possible replacements.
