Manchester United have received a major boost in race to sign Raphael Varane as he has reportedly told his Real Madrid teammates that he wants to leave the club this summer.

Earlier this week, reports in France claimed that the 25-year-old is seriously considering his future at the Santiago Bernabeu and believes now is the time to seek a fresh challenge.

United have been long-time admirers of Varane, while Jose Mourinho failed with his attempt to sign the France international during his time as manager at Old Trafford.

But United could stand a better chance of signing Varane this summer as Marca report that the defender has already told the players he is close to in Madrid’s dressing room that the possibility of him leaving at the end of the season is more than a idea and could become a reality.

The report also claims that he has also privately admitted that it is time to leave Madrid to seek a new challenge, but he needs more time to make a final decision over his future.

Zinedine Zidane, however, wants Varane to remain at the club but Marca claim the Madrid manager could do little to stop the defender if he pushed hard for a move away.

Varane has a €500 million (£431m) release clause in his current deal with Madrid which expires in 2022.
