Hungary manager Marco Ross has compared Daniel James to Usain Bolt ahead of the side’s Euro 2020 qualifying match against Wales.
James, 21, completed an £18million move from Swansea to Old Trafford last week to kick off what promises to be a busy transfer window for Manchester United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to overhaul his squad after a dismal end to the season and the Norwegian has been convinced by James’ potential, with Ryan Giggs raving about the young winger.
James terrorised defenders in the Championship last season with his electrifying pace as he notched up four goals and seven assists in an exceptional breakthrough season.
Hungary have done their homework on James ahead of Tuesday night’s Group E clash and their manager, Ross, has compared the Welshman to sprint legend Bolt, as well as Brazilian icon Ronaldo.
‘James’ speed reminds of Usain Bolt – to be so fast like him is really incredible,’ Ross said at his press conference on Monday.
‘In the last ten years I don’t remember one player that gave me this sensation.
‘His acceleration is so peculiar, which is why Manchester United have bought him.
Ross added: ‘In the past I played against a very fast player who, according to me, was the best after [Diego] Maradona – Ronaldo.
‘He was not just known for speed, but for everything.
‘His acceleration looked like James, though at the moment the skills are a little bit different.’
Wales manager Giggs has no doubts that James has the ability to succeed at the very top level.
‘You don’t need to speak to me to see the quality Dan has, especially since the turn of the year,’ Giggs said.
‘The transfer breaking down with Leeds was well documented. He’s kicked on and obviously was fantastic for me in the last game.
‘When you’ve got speed like that as well as the talent he can play anywhere.’
