Manchester United are set to hold talks with the agent of Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes in London with a view to signing the Portugal international.

The 24-year-old has been identified by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a replacement for Ander Herrera, who left the club at the end of last season after failing to agree a contract extension.

Fernandes’ rise in Portugal has been rapid and he hit an astonishing 31 goals from midfield last season, which alerted a host of European clubs to his potential.

He is now a regular for the international side and is keen on a move to the Premier League, be it with United or Tottenham.

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be an admirer of Fernandes but the club are working on keeping Christian Eriksen.

The Dane revealed a desire to leave the club following their defeat in the Champions League final and Spurs could only finance a deal for Fernandes with the money received from Eriksen’s departure.

Fernandes’ agent is believed to have already held one round of talks with the Premier League pair and O Jogo claim he will back in London again on Wednesday for further negotiations.

Miguel Pinho will speak to both clubs again and it will be a chance for them to submit a bid for the midfielder.

Sporting are seeking around £70m for Fernandes but neither club is willing to meet that valuation.

United believe the Portuguese ace is worth closer to £49m but will not focus on the transfer until a deal for Aaron Wan-Bissaka is complete.
