Manchester United are set to make a renewed bid for Netherlands defender Matthijs De Ligt after failing with a move for the Dutchman last summer.

United lost out to Juventus as the Italians won the race to sign the former Ajax man for £75million last summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was desperate to sign the Dutchman and was prepared to sign De Ligt alongside an £80m move for Harry Maguire.

De Ligt’s had a mixed campaign in Turin and has failed to replicate the form that made him the most sought after player in world football last summer.

The defender’s started 17 of Juventus’s 26 matches this term and there is a sense that Maurizio Sarri is not set on the Dutchman.

ESPN claims United are now ready to test Juventus’ resolve to keep De Ligt and are prepared to make a big money move for him this summer.

It’s unclear whether the Serie A giants would sell just 12 months into the Dutchman’s stint in Italy but United believe he is ‘perfect’ for how Solskjaer wants his side to play at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer will seek an alternative to De Ligt should Juventus not show a willingness to sell and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly is another target.
