Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United need to sign a player like Harry Kane or Erling Haaland more than long-term transfer target Jadon Sancho.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed interest in signing Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last summer but the England international ended up staying in Germany.

The Red Devils have continued to keep tabs on Sancho throughout the 2020-21 season and may decide to revive their interest during this summer’s transfer window.

Carragher believes United could do with signing a player to play on the right-wing but says the club’s priority should be a quality striker.

Much has been made of United’s poor record against fellow top-six clubs this season but Carragher believes the issue is personnel rather than conservative tactics from Solskjaer.

‘I wouldn’t describe Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a defensive manager,’ Carragher told Sky Sports. ‘He’s played for Manchester United, in those successful teams.

‘Right now, I actually think it’s a quality issue. Is there enough quality when the ball goes to the forward players?

‘They’re the top-scorers in the Premier League but have they got that player to score the decisive goal in a tight game, that player who is going to take them to the league title?

‘People talk about Manchester United needing a right-winger and they went for Jadon Sancho. They need a centre forward more than anything, in my book.

‘If you’ve got [Marcus] Rashford, a centre forward and a right-winger and Greenwood supplementing that… he’s still young but he will be a quality player.

‘I think that’s where they’re lacking right now. I think it’s a lack of quality and you look at the options, you think of Harry Kane from this country, and Haaland is another one coming through.’

Asked whether Manchester United should be attempting to sign one of Kane or Haaland, former Red Devils striker Mark Hughes added: ‘They are certainly the type they need to be in the market for.

‘How accessible those players will be or whether they can attract those players, who knows? Because there’s a lot of clubs who will go for them.’
