Manchester United are in talks with Manchester City to agree a fee for 16-year-old wonderkid Charlie McNeill, who has already declared his intention to leave the Etihad this summer.

The prolific striker, who has scored over 600 goals in his youth career so far, has rejected a new contract at City and is set to leave the club.

He announced as much on his Instagram in June, writing: ‘It’s been such a pleasure to play with some amazing players and I’ve made some amazing friends too. Thanks to all the staff and players for helping me develop as a player and also as a person.’

United, where McNeill started his young career before moving to City six years ago, are keen to resign the exciting talent and have begun negotiations over a compensation fee.

The young forward does not turn 17 until September so any club that wants to sign him must agree compensation with City or it will go to a tribunal to decide.

Talks have been slow, with City pushing for a substantial seven-figure sum, given his immense scoring record and as he has appeared for England at youth level.

The Daily Mail report that talks are ongoing, but given how difficult they have proved so far, other suitors have been alerted.

Leeds United and Wolves have been credited with an interest in McNeill and may look to swoop if the Red Devils cannot get a deal soon.

One thing working in Manchester United’s favour is that McNeill is a fan of the club and will be more easily persuaded to move back across Manchester than to elsewhere in the country.

RB Leipzig have also shown an interest in the teenager and would be keen to take him to the Bundesliga, having already picked up Noah Ohio from City in a similar move last year.
