Manchester United ‘in contact’ over new signing despite Eric Bailly contract extension

Manchester United are reportedly in contact with Pau Torres ahead of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils announced on Monday that Eric Bailly had signed a new contract with the club. But, despite that, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still on the lookout for reinforcements.

Bailly was thrilled after extending his stay with the Red Devils, who he’s been with ever since arriving from Villarreal back in 2016.

“I’m very happy,” he told club media.

“This decision is something I didn’t have to think about, I love this club and I love playing for Manchester United.

“I’m happy and so are my family, everything is good. Now the moment with my injury has passed and I’m fit and feel good, and that’s it.

“A new contract is like a new challenge and I’m ready for this.”

Some have suggested that the decision to give Bailly a new contract could see the club shelve interest in signing a new centre-back come the end of the campaign.

As well as Torres, United have also been tipped to pursue Real Madrid stalwart Raphael Varane – who may be allowed to leave the Bernabeu behind for a new challenge elsewhere.

But signing the 2018 World Cup winner will be far from straightforward with Premier League rivals Chelsea also interested in a swoop.

Speaking recently, Torres insisted he was relaxed over his future.

“I’m very calm, I have a contract with the club in my town and I’m enjoying it,” said the centre-back.

“I have to work to help my team.”

Regarding Bailly, the Ivory Coast international believes United are on the right track to success under Solskjaer – and feels wanted and appreciated by the Norwegian.

“That’s why I say the new contract shows the group has confidence in me – the coach, the staff and the players and, for me, that is very important,” he said.

“And that’s why I made this decision to stay at the club.

“For me, it’s the dream to be here.

“Now it’s my fifth season and I hope to be here a long time.

“We are in a good position. We have the Europa League and we are second in the league and that is very good.

“We hope we can win this trophy [Europa League] – it is very important for us and for the fans and for the season. We want to finish well in the Premier League as well, I’m sure we will.

“I hope I can be ready and I don’t get any injuries and to be strong and finish the season well.

“I hope to win the Europa League this season. We will have more challenges next season – hopefully the Champions League – and, for me, my dream is to win the Premier League, that’s my big dream.”

When asked if United are capable of Premier League success, Bailly was confident in his reply.

“I believe, I believe. I believe in my team-mates,” he said, having won two trophies during his time at the Theatre of Dreams so far.

“We are a good, young team. The team wants to improve and that’s very important for the group for next season.”
