Manchester United have a ‘massive problem’ up front and won’t make the top four, says Jamie Carragher

Manchester United will not finish in the top four of the Premier League and have a ‘massive problem’ scoring goals, according to Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

The Red Devils are struggling under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer this season, currently 14th in the Premier League, although they did pick up a draw with table-topping Liverpool last weekend, which will have boosted morale.

Goals have been a problem for United this season, with just 10 in nine league games, and one in three Europa League games so far this campaign.

Carragher cannot see Solskjaer’s side staying in the bottom half, but believes the lack of fire power will leave them short of competing for a Champions League place.

‘I think they’ll get better, of course they will,’ Carragher told Sky Sports. ‘The position they are in the table, they won’t end up there, they’ll get better, of course, but I don’t think they’ll get top four.

‘There’s talk about Leicester getting top six and you’re not quite sure who’s going to miss out, but certainly United are one of the big candidates of the top six to miss out with Leicester going strong.

‘Seeing Manchester United in the next couple of games against Norwich and Bournemouth, they’re tests for Manchester United, are they good enough to go and open those teams up?

‘They have a massive problem, they cannot score more than one goal in a game, that is a massive problem for them going forward.’

Carragher is right in his assessment as United have gone 12 games in a row without scoring more than one goal.

The one and only time they struck more was on the opening match of the season when they hammered Chelsea 4-0.

Since then they have won just once in the Premier League and are just two points above the relegation zone ahead of a trip to Norwich City on Sunday afternoon.
