Manchester United supporters have urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to hand Angel Gomes a first-team call-up after he scored a brilliant goal for the club’s U23s against West Ham.

The 18-year-old is highly regarded at United and became the club’s youngest ever Premier League debutant when he featured against Crystal Palace in May 2017 aged 16 years and 263 days old.

Solskjaer handed Gomes two Premier League appearances during the second half of last season, however, the England U19 international hasn’t been able to force his way into the first-team so far this season.

That may soon change, though, after he seized the opportunity to impress for United’s U23 side on Friday night by scoring an excellent individual goal against West Ham at Old Trafford.

Receiving the ball midway through West Ham’s half, Gomes slalomed towards goal before unleashing an unstoppable shot with his right foot that nestled in the side netting to hand Neil Wood’s side a 1-0 lead.

There had been speculation that Gomes might have been included in United’s squad for Saturday’s trip to Southampton following injuries to Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, however, he was kept back for the U23s instead.

Gomes’ peers Mason Greenwood and James Garner are reported to have travelled to the South Coast, though, and could be in contention to play as Solskjaer seeks to address his injury problems in defence and attack.

There are plenty of United fans who think Gomes should be with Greenwood and Garner, judging by some reactions on Twitter…
