Toffees boss Marco Silva was keen to land a central defender to solve their problem at the back.

But the Mail write that United changed the parameters before the deal could be finalised and Everton walked away from the transfer.

Rojo was itching to leave Old Trafford having made just two league starts last season.

He has failed to win over boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in pre-season and the arrival of Harry Maguire pushed him further down the pecking order.

But Rojo could still seal a loan move as there are extended deadlines in France, Italy, Spain and there has been interest in Turkey.

Solskjaer is expected to deploy Victor Lindelof alongside Maguire at the heart of his defence this season with Smalling as first reserve.

With seven centre-backs at the club, Solskjaer nevertheless rejected the chance to loan Chris Smalling to the Toffees on Wednesday.

Everton did, however, complete a £40million late swoop for Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi.
