Manchester United are confident of completing an £80million move for James Maddison next summer and are willing to make the midfielder one of the best paid players at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on bolstering his midfield, having lost the likes of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera in the last 12 months but failing to sign a single replacement.

Maddison, a boyhood United fan, is believed to be keen on a move to Old Trafford but Leicester are keen on keeping the England international and have opened negotiations over a new bumper deal.

The 23-year-old can triple his wages at the King Power Stadium but the Daily Star claim talks have not progressed as much as claimed with the Foxes.

That’s given United further encouragement that a deal for Maddison is possible next summer with the Red Devils believing that Maddison is keen on the move.

Leicester value Maddison at around £80m, meaning any deal would make him United’s joint-second biggest arrival behind Paul Pogba’s world record return in 2016.

Maddison is expected to be named in England’s squad for Euro 2020 and the report claims that Ed Woodward will aim to strike a deal before the tournament begins.

Solskjaer will be handed significant funds to spend in January – as well as the summer – but the club are pessimistic about their chances of adding to the squad in the winter market.

The Norwegian is content to wait until the summer if he cannot sign his targets in January.

Solskjaer wants a central midfielder, an attacking midfielder and another forward.
