Manchester City’s stance on Kyle Walker’s future

Kyle Walker’s Manchester City future is not under threat this summer with Pep Guardiola set to stick by the England defender, Metro.co.uk understands.

The 29-year-old released a public apology in early April after reports in the Sun claimed the defender held a party with two sex workers, which directly flouted lockdown measures that had been introduced in the UK just ten days earlier.

City detailed their dismay in a statement of their own and confirmed they would conduct an internal disciplinary procedure into Walker’s actions.

‘Manchester City are aware of a story in a tabloid newspaper regarding the private life of Kyle Walker in relation to a breach of the UK lockdown and social distancing rules. Footballers are global role models and our staff and players have been working to support the incredible efforts of the NHS and other key workers in fighting the effects of Covid-19, in any way we can,’ a statement read.

‘Kyle’s actions in this matter have directly contravened these efforts. We are disappointed to hear the allegations, note Kyle’s swift statement and apology, and will be conducting an internal disciplinary procedure.”’

Walker was caught breaking lockdown rules for a second time in early May when he visited family in Yorkshire and the defender contacted a number of supporters to apologise after he took criticism for failing to comply with restrictions.

City declined to take action against Walker for the second misdemeanour as they sympathise with each player’s difficulties in being separated from their family and in Walker’s case, the club were content with his efforts to apologise to supporters individually.

Despite Walker’s wrongdoings, Guardiola bears no grudge against the defender and is counting on keeping him at the club next season.

Joao Cancelo’s arrival was a test for Walker but the England international has kept his place as first choice right-back and his form since the New Year has pleased Guardiola, who believes the added competition has had the desired effect on the former Tottenham full-back.

Walker’s current deal runs until 2024 and his wages of £150,000-a-week would deter most Premier League clubs, particularly in the current climate.

Beyond Walker’s worth as a homegrown player, Guardiola believes he still has two to three years left at the top level and the Spaniard is planning for next season with the defender in mind.

Walker could face competition from a new right-back as Cancelo’s time at the Etihad looks up.

The Portuguese ace has managed just 11 Premier League appearances this term and City are willing to listen to offers for him this summer just 12 months after hisa rrival from Juventus.

Though Cancelo’s performances have not been at the expected standard, his attitude off the pitch has been of greater concern with City staff unimpressed by the full-back’s persistent complaining.
