Manchester City news: Pep Guardiola says he has nothing but admiration for Leroy Sane

Pep Guardiola has insisted that he has nothing but admiration for Leroy Sané’s talents, despite rotating the Manchester City winger of late.

Sané was one of several surprise omissions from City’s starting line-up in the 1-0 Champions League quarter-final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old, who was named PFA Young Player of the Year last season, has also only featured in four of City’s last eight Premier League games.

Sané is expected to return to the City side for Sunday’s crucial trip to Crystal Palace, with the defending champions looking to keep pace with leaders Liverpool.

And Guardiola defended his use of Sané when the matter was raised at his pre-match press conference, insisting that he has faith in the player’s ability.

“I have said many times how important Leroy has been for us in good or bad moments,” the City manager said. “He knows the reason why he hasn’t played lately.

“We spoke often with him – myself and my people – on and off the pitch and we want the best.

“Of course there is competition from the other ones, and in some specific games we need it, and in some specific games I prefer a type of player to have more control.

“But my admiration and trust with him is intact. It’s there, but I always want more.”

Sané’s current contract at the Etihad expires in 2021 and City are looking to tie the Germany international down to renewed terms.

Guardiola dismissed the suggestion that the winger’s contract situation had anything to do with his rotation in and out of the team.

“[Ilkay] Gundogan would not play if that was a reason why,” Guardiola pointed out.

“Gundogan has one year left and doesn’t want to extend so he would not play and he plays – ahead of Kevin De Bruyne.

“I take the decisions on the pitch, what I believe in that moment, what I feel, and take a decision. I know how it works.”
