Manchester City have made an initial approach to sign N’Golo Kante from Chelsea, according to reports.

Pep Guardiola’s side are in the market for a long-term successor to Fernandinho, who turns 34 next month, and have several names on their shortlist.

Kante, meanwhile, has established himself as one of the world’s best defensive midfielders having won the Premier League title with both Leicester City and Chelsea, while he also played a key part in France’s World Cup success last summer.

But under Maurizio Sarri this season, Kante has been ousted from his favoured role at the heart of Chelsea’s midfield to accommodate Jorginho, who moved to Stamford Bridge in a £57 million deal from Napoli last July.

According to Goal, City have been monitoring Kante’s situation at Chelsea and have requested intermediaries to keep them up to date if the midfielder becomes unhappy at the club.

But the report claims that Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban has extinguished any hope of City being able to bring Kante to the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Instead, City have reportedly made Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo Hernandez their priority target.

The 22-year-old, who was wanted by Barcelona last summer before Atletico signed him from Villarreal, has a €70m (£60m) release clause in his current deal.
