What caused the cancellations?

Thousands were marooned last night after a power cut left flights grounded due to a refuelling issue.

This morning the airport confirmed engineers had resolved the power issue affecting the fuel supply – but warned there was still disruption in store.

In a statement, they said a “small number of delays and cancellations” were expected, and urged passengers to check with their airline before travelling.

An estimated 17,000 passengers were affected by yesterday’s disruption, after planes were left unable to take off last night due to not being able to refuel.

Some were moved to hotels after a three-hour wait, in the hope of getting a flight in the morning.

Planes in need of refuelling were unable to take off, while inbound flights were diverted to other airports or delayed before departure at airports across Europe.

Some pre-fuelled planes were taking passengers to nearby airports, including Nottingham, to be refuelled again before continuing their route.

Manchester Airport initially tweeted saying “there are no cancellations tomorrow”, but revised that statement today.

What have passengers said?

Furious passengers yesterday blasted the delays as “absolute carnage”, “chaos” and a “total shambles”.

Danny Dakin from Halifax, West Yorkshire, was meant to be flying to Marrakesh with his girlfriend on Sunday afternoon to celebrate his 20th birthday, but was left stranded at the airport since 4pm.

He told The Sun Online: “I was told my flight was cancelled at 7pm and I’ve been stood out here for three hours. I’m really annoyed.

“There are loads of teenagers meant to be going on holiday and some of them are crying.

“Everyone’s outside waiting for coaches. But we were advised to get taxis to Liverpool instead.

“Then Ryanair told us to go home or find a hotel – but we have to pay for it ourselves.

“There’s loads of furious people.”

Martin Keogh, from Northenden was due to fly to Palma at 5pm with his wife and twin boys with Jet2. He said: “At about 4.30pm we were told there was a site wide power disruption which was affecting refuelling.

“I’ve not seen any aircraft take off since.

“You can imagine everyone is sat around it is a bit of a nightmare.”

Rachael Smith, 36, from Edinburgh, had been due to fly with easyJet to Preveza in Greece on business but her flight was cancelled at around 7.15pm.

Speaking from the aircraft she told the M.E.N: “I’ve been sitting here close on three hours now, which funnily enough was the flight time. We’ve just been told the flight has been cancelled.

“We’re waiting to be taken off but there’s a backlog.”

After half-an-hour of waiting, Rachael said the captain informed passengers ‘we’ve got no fuel’ but it took another two hours of sitting on the stationary aircraft to be told of the ‘system failure’ affecting refuelling.
