Man Utd winners and losers with Ralf Rangnick coming in as interim manager

Ralf Rangnick appears to be set to take over as Manchester United manager until the end of the season, with the Premier League club’s players now wondering what his reign will look like. Known as the godfather of modern coaching, Rangnick’s arrival should bring with it a marked improvement on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s spell in charge.

Rangnick has been the influence for top bosses Thomas Tuchel, Jurgen Klopp and Julian Naglesmann, having developed the Gegenpressing system that is widely used in football today.

Having dropped to eighth in the top-flight after a run of one win in seven league games, United’s squad are clearly underperforming badly.

That would suggest that Rangnick will make quick changes to the Red Devils’ starting line-up in a bid to kickstart their season.

If he does make those changes as expected, the German will ruffle more than a few feathers in the Old Trafford dressing room.

Here, Daily Express Sport looks at four winners and four losers from the decision to bring in Rangnick…

Dean Henderson – Winner

While David de Gea has performed well this season, a change at goalkeeper would not come as a surprise.

Current back-up Dean Henderson is much more vocal than the Spaniard, something that may help Rangnick organise what is currently a shambolic defence.

Henderson is also much better with his feet than De Gea, which will play a big factor as the new boss looks to implement a possession-based style of football.

Fred – Loser

One of the main targets for criticism under Solskjaer was Fred, who has failed to live up to the £50million fee United paid for him.

With Rangnick looking for players who are comfortable on the ball, the Brazilian is unlikely to keep his place in United’s team for much longer.

Alex Telles – Winner

Luke Shaw’s struggles have epitomised the way United’s defence has fallen apart this season, with the Englishman taking a huge step back from his performances last term.

Solskjaer was unwilling to use Alex Telles, but the Brazilian deserves his shot at a starting role and arguably carries more attacking threat than Shaw, a key part in Rangnick’s system.

Paul Pogba – Loser

Paul Pogba’s refusal to sign a new contract will be unlikely to play well with Rangnick, who could focus on bringing in other midfielders to his team.

The Frenchman’s inconsistency when picked is also unlikely to do him any favours with a coach who likes to be in control and trust his team.

Donny van de Beek – Winner

The man who Solskjaer refused to play could breathe life into his United career under Rangnick, following an impressive cameo against Watford.

Van de Beek has previously been part of a possession-based system at Ajax, which will stand him in good stead of earning a starting place under the interim manager.

Cristiano Ronaldo – Loser

A key plank of Rangnick’s footballing philosophy is pressing, which spells bad news for Cristiano Ronaldo, despite his goals return.

Ronaldo presses less than virtually any other forward in the Premier League, a fact that will not play well if it continues under Rangnick.

Jadon Sancho – Winner

If there are changes in attack, Jadon Sancho would be one of the biggest winners, having been played out of position for much of his United career so far.

Rangnick has seen Sancho up close in the Bundesliga, so will be well aware of how to get the best out of the young winger.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Loser

All the members of United’s failing defence will be feeling the pressure under Rangnick, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s attacking deficiencies means he is most at threat of losing his place.

The former Crystal Palace star has regularly come in for criticism for his lack of output going forward, with attacking full-backs being a major part of Rangnick’s style.
