Man Utd win equals club record and makes it clear how they must improve

Manchester United’s 3-1 win over Everton saw them equal a long-standing club record – and also made it abundantly clear where they need to improve.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side fell behind to Bernard’s 19th minute strike, but Bruno Fernandes brought them level soon after with a brilliant header.

The Portuguese midfielder got a second before half-time, and set up Edinson Cavani in the dying moments to seal a crucial victory.

The result means that despite their up-and-down form, United have now impressively won their last seven away league matches.

This equals the longest away winning run in the club’s senior league history, set by Sir Alex Ferguson’s team between April and August in 1993.

Manchester United’s win against Everton saw yet more success away from home in the Premier League

The last time United did not pick up three points in the Premier League on the road came during their first game back after lockdown last season when they drew 1-1 with Tottenham.

Since then they have gone on to beat Brighton, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Brighton again, Newcastle and now Everton.

And the manner in which they have got their victories has also been largely impressive, with United scoring three or more goals in all but two of those fixtures.

Paradoxically, however, their form at Old Trafford has been far less impressive, and it is clearly their home performances which they need to work on.

United have failed to win in all four of their home league games this season, with a rotten record of three defeats and one draw.

Even towards the end of the previous campaign they were struggling, with consecutive draws against Southampton and West Ham their last two games at Old Trafford.

Yet United have still not won at home in the league this season

Some have suggested that their preferred counter-attacking tactics are more effective away from home, and it is for this reason that they enjoy more success on the road.

But Solskjaer must find a way of breaking down sides at Old Trafford if they are to compete for major honours this season.

They host West Brom after the international break in what has to be seen as a must-win game, and their next league game at home after that is a derby clash with bitter rivals Manchester City.

Failure to win either of them would surely see the pressure fully mount on Solskjaer yet again, and there is only so far United’s away form will be able to take him.
