Manchester United’s transfer business has been unable to propel them forward as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer faces yet more questions about his future.

A summer of recruitment that was supposed to make the Red Devils title challengers looks to have taken them backwards.

Watford are the latest side to get the better of United and attention will turn to the future of their manager.

The failure to sign a central midfielder in the summer continues to look a poor decision and it will be hard to solve their issues midseason.

Paul Pogba’s contract will soon run out which could force United into a corner sooner rather than later.

In attack several players are also considering their options with Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani among them.

The latter could yet be on the move as we bring you the latest transfer rumours.

Edinson Cavani is a target for Barcelona as they look to replace the sidelined Sergio Aguero.

The Spanish giants, who have been beset by financial issues, are ready to offer Manchester United a transfer fee of around £4million to £5m for the veteran striker.

Former Manchester City star Aguero has been ruled out for most of the rest of this season after a heart problem was detected. There are fears the issue could even end his career.

New Barca boss Xavi must hunt for a striker in the January window and Old Trafford star Cavani has emerged as an option.

Cavani – a free agent next summer – has been frustrated at Old Trafford since Cristiano Ronaldo ’s arrival, after having received prior assurances that the club were NOT looking to bring in a striker who would play through the middle.

That all changed when Ronaldo became available for his second coming – and Cavani, 34, has found his game time restricted.

At this stage of his career Cavani wants to play week in, week out – and Barca can offer that.

Italian giants Inter Milan are also keen on signing the United man.

Zakaria’s incentive

United have made contact with Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria as they attempt to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

German news outlet Blick report that United have made moves to sign the Switzerland midfielder, who is poised to leave the Bundesliga outfit.

Zakaria, a defensive midfielder, has made it clear that he will not be signing a new deal at Monchengladbach which is set to force their hand.

A January move could be on the cards but it appears more likely that the Premier League side will make a summer offer than could include a €10-12m (£8.4m-£10m) signing on bonus

De Jong pinpointed as Pogba replacement

United have identified Frenkie De Jong as a possible Paul Pogba replacement this summer.

The Frenchman’s contract is up in the summer and he looks set to leave for pastures new leaving United light on a midfielder.

Frenkie De Jong, who moved to Barcelona back in 2019, is among a list of players who could come in, with Declan Rice also among them, reports the Independent.

Xavi has returned to the Nou Camp and remains unconvinced by De Jong thus far which could encourage him to sell if an appropriate offer comes in.
