Who is Ralf Rangnick? Man Utd’s interim boss in profile

Incoming Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick would’ve been pleased with the team’s performance against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Red Devils secured a 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders thanks to an excellent goal from Jadon Sancho.

The England international won the ball after putting Chelsea midfielder Jorginho under pressure before slotting his effort past goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Rangnick may still want to bring in some fresh talent in January, however, as he looks to ensure United qualify for the Champions League.

He may also want to let a few players leave the club, with the likes of Jesse Lingard and Donny van de Beek struggling for minutes.

Here, Mirror Football round-up the latest transfer rumours from Old Trafford – including an update on Kalvin Phillips’ future.

Rangnick could be appointed United’s permanent boss at the end of the season, according to The Sun.

It’s believed the German’s deal could include a clause to extend his spell in charge if he impresses his new employers.

The finer details of Rangnick’s contract are reportedly still being finalised.

His predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed United’s manager until the end of the season in December 2018 – but his position was made permanent four months later.

That decision proved to be a mistake, as the Norwegian failed to win a trophy during his three-year stint in the hot seat.

Martial on Barca’s radar

Barcelona are interested in signing Anthony Martial, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo.

The forward, 25, has scored just eight goals in all competitions since the start of the 2020-21 campaign and has slipped down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

United have endless attacking options to choose from, including Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford.

Barcelona are reportedly wanting to add to their attacking ranks in January and have contacted United about Martial’s availability.

It’s believed a lot will depend of Rangnick’s plans for the Frenchman and the next few weeks could determine his Old Trafford future.

Leeds ace Kalvin Phillips has no interest in joining the Red Devils, according to the Daily Star.

It’s believed United were hoping to sign the 19-cap international, 25, for £60million in the near future.

Phillips helped England reach the final of Euro 2020 last summer and has made 224 career appearances to date – including 39 in the Premier League.

But Phillips is said to be concerned about the possible ramifications for his family should he leave his hometown club for their bitter rivals.

The combative midfielder has spent his entire career at Leeds and would ruin his cult hero status by joining United.

“I have always said Liverpool-Manchester United games are fierce in many aspects,” said Sir Alex Ferguson in 2011. “But it never reaches the levels of Leeds United. Never.

“It was frightening at our hotel. We had seven police vans round the hotel protecting the team. Historically, it has been there for a long time. I don’t understand it, but it’s not nice.”
