Man Utd told what they should do about sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United face a ‘big decision’ over whether to retain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their manager for next season.

United have had a poor start to the season, currently languishing tenth in the table, 10 points off the top four.

They had a mini-revival with three away wins in a row but were beaten by Bournemouth on Saturday after a toothless display.

Solskjaer is understood to still have the backing of his squad and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

But failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League would represent a major blow to Solskjaer’s hopes of staying in the job.

Speaking on Sky Sports programme Kings of the Premier League, Carragher was asked whether Solskjaer was the right man to stay in the job.

And while the former Liverpool player felt United may be reluctant to sack the Norwegian mid-season, he warned that the hierarchy should be considering if Solskjaer is the right man to take them forward next season.

Carragher said: “I think he is now.

“I don’t think Man Utd should be thinking about changing a manager any time this season.

“They’ve got a big decision to make whether Ole is the manager at the start of next season.

“No one starts the season thinking they are going to change the manager through the season. It is too much upheaval, who do you bring in, you’ve brought players.

“The best time is the end of the season or towards the end to give the manager a full pre-season.

“Man Utd have got to look at it ‘do we want a manager for this season and whole of next season?’

“If they do [then] fine that’s up to them but what they won’t want to do is next season in October [or] November if they make a bad start is then [think] ‘what do we do’.

“I think no problem this season but maybe when the summer comes [ask] would you go the full season again with Ole.

“But if Ole has a good season this year, finishes it strongly, does well in the cup or Europe, of course keep him in there.”
