Man Utd told the one manager who should replace Solskjaer – ‘As likely a candidate as any’

Massimiliano Allegri is “as likely a candidate as any” to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United, reckons former West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop.

United have had a poor start to the Premier League season, leading to question marks over Solskjaer’s long-term future at the club.

Hislop says executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward should be the first person to leave the Red Devils, shortly followed by Solskjaer.

And he says former Juventus boss Allegri would be the most likely replacement.

“I think the first thing they need to do is replace Woodward with somebody that knows the game and knows the job, and then Solskjaer has to go,” Hislop told ESPN FC.

“I think Allegri is as likely a candidate as any to come in and fix things. That’s the first two things you need to do.”

United came out in defence of Solskjaer earlier this week as Woodward pledged his faith in the Norwegian but Hislop has criticised the statement from the club chief.

“I find it really confusing what Manchester United are all about and what you’re hearing coming from the club,” Hislop added.

“After the result at the weekend there was a statement put out about ‘we are as disappointed about the results as the fans are but rest assured we’re trying to get it right’.

“That was the most unconvincing statement I’d heard from a board, certainly from a club of this magnitude, for quite some time.

“I’m really not sure who the audience was for that ridiculous statement.

“If you’re talking about the culture of the club not being right, I think you have to look at not just what’s happening on the field but also in the boardroom.

“There’s no real change upstairs, as much as they dictate the direction, and you need a manager who can communicate that direction from the board and turn it into results on the field. I don’t think Solskjaer is that manager either.

“So everywhere you look, from top to bottom of this club, regardless of which end you see as top, nothing about it is convincing.”
