The United gaffer is keen to bolster his squad in the New Year after a difficult start to the season has left them with an uphill battle to finish in the top four.

A striker has always been the priority and 33-year-old Mandzukic fits the bill as a short term solution.

Anthony Martial’s timely return from injury will relieve the pressure from Marcus Rashford but the Norwegian still wants at least one more to bolster the firepower in his side.

Mandzukic is free to leave Juventus having fallen completely out of Maurizio Sarri’s plans.

Another member of Sarri’s bomb squad is former Liverpool midfielder Can.

Solskjaer has yet to replace Ander Herrera who left on a free in the summer and Tuttosport claim that Can would welcome a move back to the Premier League with United.

He has made just one Serie A start this season and is available for the right price in January.

Can was also left furious after being left out of Juventus’ Champions League squad.

However they could face competition from both Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain who are also keeping a close eye.
