Both United and the star’s former club Tottenham are keen to bring the 29-year-old back to the Premier League but have been put off by the £75m price tag.

But the Daily Mirror claim the Red Devils are prepared to fork out £25m to bring him to Old Trafford on a 12-month loan with the option to extend it by a year.

And they hope the prospect of Madrid being able to slash their wage bill by £50m over the course of the next two campaigns will tempt them into sanctioning the switch for the £600k-a-week attacker.

Both United and Madrid are desperate to bolster their squads after miserable domestic seasons.

The Galacticos, who have already secured the services of Eden Hazard from Chelsea, want Bale out of the club in order to free up a huge chunk of wages and transfer funds.

However the ex-Soutrhampton ace is refusing to go easily and the lack of Champions League football at United could scupper Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hopes of landing him.

The forward has won the Euro crown on four occasions since arriving in the Spanish capital from Spurs in 2013, scoring twice in last year’s final victory over Liverpool.

Despite that, he has endured a miserable run of injuries, and the club’s supporters have not held back in criticising him.

But United chief Ed Woodward is believed to be desperate to bring in a big-name signing to excite the Stretford End and Bale fits the bill ideally.

He still has three years remaining on his contract but United hope the loan arrangement can be reached so he can join his Wales international team-mate Daniel James at Old Trafford.

United have agreed a fee with Swansea for James and he is expected to finalise the switch following the international break.

Both men featured in their country’s 2-1 Euro 2020 qualifier defeat in Croatia yesterday.
