Manchester United are considering a move for Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez in the summer, but will face stiff competition from Juventus and Napoli, while Everton also want to tempt him tempt him to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old’s time at the Bernabeu appears to be at an end, with Real manager Zinedine Zidane happy to let him go and the club looking to cash in with his contract expiring in 2021.

Having spent the previous two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich, the Colombian has been back in the Spanish capital this campaign, but has made just four La Liga starts and three more appearances from the bench.

Real are still looking for around £35m for Rodriguez, and they may well get that amount given the interest in the former Porto and Monaco man.

Spanish publication AS reports that Manchester United are interested in bringing Rodriguez to Old Trafford, with the possibility of Paul Pogba going the other way as part of the deal.

Pogba is widely expected to leave United this summer, with Real Madrid one of two likely destinations, along with Juventus. With Real not wanting to meet United’s valuation of over £100m, Rodriguez could facilitate that deal.

However, there is stiff competition for his signature, with both Juventus and Napoli hoping to attract him to Italy.

Napoli tried to sign him last season on loan, but failed, while at Juve, his former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo is an attraction, especially as Rodriguez has the same agent – Jorge Mendes.

A wildcard in the Rodriguez race is Everton, with Carlo Ancelotti hoping to pull off a huge coup for the Toffees.

Ancelotti was in charge of Real Madrid when Rodriguez enjoyed his best season with the club – 2014/15 – scoring 17 goals in 46 games across all competitions.

Everton could afford the transfer fee, but it will be a struggle for them to compete with the bigger clubs in the battle for James’ signature.
