Manchester United have reportedly set a £15million asking price for Nemanja Matic as the midfielder continues to be linked with a move to Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

Serbia international Matic flourished under Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, helping Chelsea win two Premier League titles, and followed the Portuguese manager to Old Trafford in 2017.

The 31-year-old was once rated as one of the best midfielders in Europe but his influence is waning and Matic has made just three league appearances for the Red Devils this term.

Due to injuries and a lack of form, Matic has not featured under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for almost two months and the United boss is ready to sanction his departure.

Matic is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and could leave on a free transfer at the end of the season, with Juventus keen to secure his signature.

Manchester United still hope to receive some funds for his transfer, however, and will ask for around £15m when the transfer window re-opens in January, according to The Sun.

The Serbian star cost £40m two years ago and United are keen to get some of that money back, although they acknowledge they may have to sell him for a much cheaper fee.

Despite his frustrating spell at Old Trafford, a number of managers remain admirers of the midfielder, with Mourinho and Antonio Conte reportedly interested in bringing him to Tottenham and Inter Milan respectively.

Mourinho returned to the Premier League last month to replace Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham and is said to be considering a move for Matic, who has hinted he would be open to the move to north London.

Red Devils hero Peter Schmeichel, meanwhile, has urged Solskjaer to restore Matic to Manchester United’s struggling first-team.

‘They needed a player like Matic today [against Sheffield United], just to sit in that defensive midfield role and just calm things down,’ Schmeichel said last week.

‘He’s been criticised for being slow and playing the ball backwards too many times, but sometimes they needed that in this game.’
