They state that the former Cardiff manager has credit in the bank due to being an Old Trafford legend, but the board are demanding results after investing heavily in his project.

Should they part ways with the 46-year-old, the report claims that Southgate is seen as a good fit for United, with Ed Woodward impressed by how the Three Lions have improved under his tutelage.

Southgate is a regular visitor to Carrington and is believed to admire the way United promotes youth players into the senior side.

Mauricio Pochettino had been the favourite to replace Solskjaer after being relieved of his duties by Tottenham in November.

The Argentine recently revealed his next job is either to be in England or Spain, and it has been suggested he already has demands should United come calling.

According to journalist Phil Brown, Poch will only takeover at United should he have full control over first team matters, along with Woodward stepping away from anything football related.

Speaking on his podcast, he said: “He (Pochettino) doesn’t want the job until the summer.

“He demands a director of football guaranteed and the director of football cannot be Ed Woodward.

“He wants full freedom of first-team matters, including who can be sold.

“He wants Woodward to step away from anything football at all and funds to be made available for purchases.”
