Man Utd players 'told club chiefs not to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer'

Manchester United players told club chiefs not to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports.

Solskjaer has presided over United’s worst start to a season since 1989 – although Red Devils fans will hope the midweek victory over Tottenham proves to be a turning point.

Before Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Old Trafford, United had just four wins from their first 14 Premier League games.

But following the victory over Jose Mourinho’s men they are now sixth going into Saturday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium – albeit still eight points off the top four.

Before the game against Tottenham, club chiefs spoke to players to gauge whether they thought Solskjaer was still the right man for the job, according to The Times .

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had done the same in the past to assess whether Mourinho should be replaced as United boss – ultimately leading to ‘the Special One’ being sacked in December last year.

The Times reports that players said they felt “mentally drained” and had never faced a more difficult campaign than last season.

But when players were consulted this week, they gave their unanimous backing to Solskjaer, saying they believed things were heading in the right direction under the Norwegian.

The pressure has been turned up on Solskjaer recently by the availability of Mauricio Pochettino after he was sacked by Tottenham.

Pochettino has long been admired by United and was last year touted as the favourite to succeed Mourinho as manager – before Solskjaer was handed the reins on a permanent basis.

Solskjaer responded to speculation over his job last week by masterminding victory over Tottenham with a much improved performance.

But his side face another tough test on Saturday when they travel to play Manchester City in the day’s evening kick-off.
