Man Utd offered Jadon Sancho transfer hope despite Borussia Dortmund price tag

Manchester United are still expected to sign Jadon Sancho despite reports claiming they won’t pay more than £50million for the winger.

Sancho is believed to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top target this summer, while Chelsea are also said to be interested.

But Borussia Dortmund want at least £100m for the 20-year-old.

The Bundesliga club have given United a deadline of August 10 to meet their asking price – but the two clubs seem far apart in their valuations at the moment.

However, one pundit says fans shouldn’t read too much into that, and reckons an agreement will be reached.

Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund are set for a transfer wrangle over Jadon Sancho

Duncan Castles of the Transfer Window podcast says Dortmund will eventually sell – as they need the money, having announced a loss of £40million this season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

And he says United have been briefing the figure of £50m merely to drive down the price of the England star.

“They have briefed the media that they will not spend more than £50m on Sancho and it is clearly a negotiating tactic,” he said on the podcast.

“They have also been talking in recruitment conversations that they do not want to spend over £50m on any player this summer.

“They have been talking about their own Covid problems and how it has affected them.

Sancho is understood to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s top target

“Their negotiating and bargaining stance is they don’t want to spend big on this.

“That is the communication from the club in a competitive bidding environment. That is not to guarantee that the price will not go above £50m.

“It is not saying they cannot spend above £50m it is saying what they want to do.

“It does still seem extremely unlikely given Dortmund’s position and the value of the player that they will be able to secure Sancho for that price.”

Castles is expecting Sancho to be sold eventually, even though Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc has insisted the club doesn’t need to cash in.

Sporting director Michael Zorc has insisted Dortmund do not need to sell Sancho

“It is no secret Dortmund are ready to sell Sancho this summer if the money is right,” Castles said.

“But they have always emphasised that the money has to be right and that it has to be 100million euros or more to sell the player.

“They briefed the German media that they wanted this done by August 10 because they have to sort out their squad for next season.

“They want to have a go at taking the Bundesliga title off Bayern Munich.

The winger recorded a hugely impressive 17 goals and 17 assists in the Bundesliga this season

“They are also prepared to give Sancho a new contract if necessary and [Michael] Zorc has already said he doesn’t see it as Sancho has to leave this summer.

“They are prepared to wait and try to get more in the transfer market the following season.

“Another thing that is important here is Zorc appears to have briefed that should they get the substantial fee for Sancho then the full amount that they receive will not be spent on new players.

“That’s indicating that they have a hit from Covid like everyone else to deal with and they see some of the Sancho money as being put into their bank accounts to cover for the losses.

“That has to be a positive sign for Manchester United and supportive of the strategy that we have detailed they are taking, which is to try and bring the price down.”
