Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists the return of Jose Mourinho following his appointment at Tottenham is good news for the Premier League.

Mourinho was sacked by Manchester United 11 months ago following a comprehensive 3-1 defeat at Liverpool, a result which capped a miserable run of form and followed a series of bust-ups with senior players, including the likes of Paul Pogba.

Solskjaer, who was initially brought in as an interim replacement, has set about the task of rebuilding United’s squad around a crop of young, British talents and he will lock horns with Mourinho on December 4 when Spurs visit Old Trafford.

‘Sorry to disappoint but it’s not gonna be about Jose or Mauricio,’ said Solskjaer when asked to comment on Daniel Levy’s decision to dispense with Mauricio Pochettino and hire Mourinho.

‘I can start with it’s good to have Jose back definitely especially for you guys and maybe for me, you can talk and write about everything else and for Mauricio it’s always sad when one of your colleagues, a good man loses job before Christmas, I wish him all the best.’

Pochettino was touted as a possible replacement for Louis van Gaal when he was sacked three years ago but the Argentine remained loyal to Spurs.

With Solskjaer’s position at Old Trafford far from rock solid, despite having been given assurances by Ed Woodward that he committed to his three-year vision, Pochettino has again been linked with the United job but the current incumbent doesn’t feel threatened by his sudden availability.

‘No, it doesn’t bother me at all, I’ve got the best job in the world and if you’re in or out of a job you want this job, so it doesn’t really matter whatever happens around it.

‘I’ve got to focus on my job at Manchester United, do it as well as we can, speak with Ed and the owners all the time about how we move forward and that doesn’t change if others change managers.’
