Sir Alex Ferguson sent his congratulations to Liverpool after their Premier League title win, according to Sir Kenny Dalglish.

The Scotsmen had some epic battles down the years at their respective clubs and United have suffered a steep slump since Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

As United have declined, Liverpool have risen to the top of English football and clinched their first ever Premier League title on Thursday.

Ferguson led an epic and successful assault on Liverpool’s dominance when he took charge at Old Trafford, but Dalglish revealed the United legend was quick to reach out to his old rivals via text.

‘He has contacted us to say congratulations by the modern medium,’ Dalglish said.

‘You go through the older generation, Fergie at Man United, Brian Kidd, Mike Summerbee, all the old foes who went through football at the same time and at the end of the year you sent a letter of congratulations.

‘That continues. It is a great compliment. You are in competition and you are rivals but to have the intelligence so you are magnanimous enough to send in a letter saying congratulations.

‘These days it has gone more technical, you get your texts or emails off the people who you have been competing with all your life.

‘They wish it was themselves who won it but they are proud to pay homage to other people.’

Liverpool’s long-awaited league triumph also knocked United off their perch as England’s most successful club.

The Reds now have 43 major trophies to United’s 42 and Dalglish was clearly emotional as he paid tribute to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

He said: ‘I’ve got glass eyes so it wouldn’t be a tear. No [I never would have believed it would taken this long to win it again] and I think you would have been arrested and sectioned.

‘Sometimes things happens but certainly the last two years and since Jurgen’s come in it’s been very, very positive all the way through.

‘He’s been fantastic and epitomises everything Liverpool football club stands for, he appreciates and respects everyone that works at the club.

‘Whatever he gets he deserves it. And it’s not a one-off because last year they came within a point of it this year they only lost one drawn two they won a club world championship they won the champions league last year as well.

‘Onward and upwards and I think we’ve got a lot more happy days to come as long as Jurgen’s there.’
