Man Utd hero Roy Keane gives list of problems he has with transfer target Declan Rice

Roy Keane has given a list of problems he has with West Ham star and Manchester United transfer target Declan Rice.

Express Sport understands Rice is a target for United after impressing in midfield with the Hammers over the last 18 months.

The 20-year-old came into the England side for the Euro 2020 qualifier against Kosovo on Sunday after being left out of the starting XI for the 7-0 win over Montenegro.

But, before the match, former United captain Keane explained a lack of consistency at club level has cost Rice at international level in a review which may set alarm bells ringing at his old club.

“Well, where he needs to improve, there’s plenty of aspects,” Keane said on ITV.

“When you think about him, over the last few months he’s had a lot of praise.

“I’ve looked at him pretty closely, I’ve worked with him when he was with the Irish squad.

“Where he needs to improve, where do you want me to start? His positional play, I don’t think he’s been consistent enough, he doesn’t stay with runners, he’s sloppy in possession, I can go on.

“He’s one of these players I think a couple of months ago people were enjoying him and loved him but he’s one of these players that has almost played his way out of the team because he’s not been consistent at West Ham.

“He’s got another opportunity tonight and I think it is a position in the England team where Gareth [Southgate’s] obviously not sure who’s going to do that job in there.

“It’s an opportunity for him tonight but he’s got to take it.”

Former England and Arsenal right-back Lee Dixon says the holding midfield role for England is a worry, as well as a centre-back partner for Harry Maguire.

“Well it is [a worry] because if you mix that with the fact that at the moment he’s probably got Maguire as his No 1 centre-back and then it’s A. N. other, who’s going to fit in there?” Dixon said.

“[Tyrone] Mings has got a chance tonight. That centre-back partnership with that midfield player in front, that little triangle is really, really important.”
