Man Utd hero Dimitar Berbatov warns Ed Woodward about MISTAKE he could make this summer

Manchester United are in the market for new Director of Football and Woodward has been in talks with several candidates including former players Rio Ferdinand and Darren Fletcher.

Mike Phelan was one candidate for the role but has today agreed to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant on a three-year deal.

But Berbatov claims United should be looking for the best possible candidate and not just a former player.

Speaking to Betfair, he said: “After Rio Ferdinand last week, Darren Fletcher is the latest name linked with the Director of Football role but why not Dimitar Berbatov? I have the degree in Sports Management (as well as coaching badges) for starters.

“This is an important position, you are the link between the manager and the team and directors. United have to find someone who can do this the right way.

“I know about the job, how it is performed and it’s on my mind but you need to be ready for this. You can’t expect to be given this role purely because you are an ex-player and United will make a mistake if they recruit solely on that basis.”

United look set to kick off their summer recruitment with the signing of £15m Daniel James.

The Swansea star is closing in on a move to Old Trafford after impressing in the Championship this season.

James, 21, has two Wales caps and scored four goals for Swansea as well as creating seven this term.

He has been compared to Ryan Giggs and Gareth Bale but Jim White has also claimed he is a Liverpool fan.

“Swansea City have got this lad Daniel James, very impressive youngster,” White said earlier this week.

“He’s rated at about £10million plus add-ons.

“It’s my understanding this morning five of the top six, all apart from Manchester City, have enquired about Daniel James at Swansea.

“He was actually recommended to Manchester United by Ryan Giggs.

“He’s a kid but he’s got a pedigree already.

“But he’s a big Liverpool fan and I wonder, are we going to see this kid Daniel James heading towards Liverpool?

“So if the news wasn’t great for Liverpool, it might even get better very soon.”
